Cabinet division orders proper display of national flag in offices
The Cabinet Division has instructed government and statutory bodies to strictly follow existing rules on displaying the national flag in office rooms following reports of unauthorised use, keeping flags hanging after sunset and failing to maintain the prescribed size, proportions and colours.
The division recently sent letters to all senior secretaries and secretaries, highlighting the irregularities and directing them to take necessary steps to ensure the national flag is displayed with due respect and dignity.
According to the letter, some officials or individuals in government and statutory institutions who are not entitled to use the national flag have been displaying it vertically on poles behind their chairs or sofas in office rooms.
Under the People’s Republic of Bangladesh Flag Rules, 1972, the national flag must generally be displayed from sunrise to sunset, except on motor vehicles, watercraft and aircraft, the letter said.
However, the Cabinet Division has noticed that some offices keep the flag hanging throughout the day and night, contrary to the prescribed rules.
The letter also raised concerns over the use of the national flag as office decoration, ornamentation or a personal or official backdrop without maintaining its prescribed size, proportions and colours.
The Cabinet Division said such practices directly violate the Bangladesh National Anthem, Flag and Emblem Order, 1972 and the People’s Republic of Bangladesh Flag Rules, 1972.
It directed the relevant authorities to take necessary measures to ensure proper respect and dignity for the national flag.
The division also asked ministries and other concerned authorities to issue the necessary instructions to their subordinate offices, constitutional institutions and autonomous bodies to ensure compliance with the rules.
