Four jailed over catching Hilsa in Rajbari
Two mobile courts in separate cases have sentenced four people to different terms and realized fine Tk 32,000 in nine cases over catching mother Hilsa during the banned period along the Padma rivers in the Rajbari district.
During the operations, the courts also seized 140,000 meters of banned current nets and three kilograms of Hilsa fish, Rajbari District Fisheries Officer Mahbubul Haq told the media onThursday.
He said the district and upazila administration in coordination with the fisheries department and law enforcement agencies conducted these operations at various points of the Padma River under Rajbari Sadar and Goalando upazilas.
The banned current nets were burnt down publicly and the seized Hilsa fishes were distributed to orphanages and madrasahs, he added.
Concerned officials said such operations will continue to ensure safe breeding of mother Hilsa, prevent illegal Hilsa harvesting and increase Hilsa production.
