Boy, 13, killed over iPhone

The killing of a 13-year-old boy allegedly over his mobile phone has raised fresh concerns over law and order, as his body was recovered from a forested area near Comilla University a day after he went missing.

Ishiyat Shahriar Opratim, son of Comilla University Bangla Department Associate Professor Dr Nahida Begum, was found dead on Saturday in the Lalmai Sananda hill and forest area near the university campus. Police have detained a young man with two ohters, identified as Tuhin, for questioning over the killing.

Police said they suspect the boy was killed for his iPhone.

Rakibul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Sadar Dakshin Model Police Station, confirmed the recovery and said investigators were questioning the detained youth.

“We are fairly certain this killing happened over the mobile phone,” he told the media.

Opratim, a seventh-grade student at Border Guard Public School, left his home at around 3:30pm on Friday to take photographs with friends. He did not return and could not be traced afterwards.

His father, KM Firoz Shahriar, subsequently filed a general diary (GD) with Comilla Sadar Dakshin Police Station. His mother, Dr Nahida Begum, also appealed for help through a Facebook post, seeking the safe return of her son.

The discovery of the body triggered an outpouring of grief, with a large number of teachers, students and local residents gathering at the scene. Police and other law enforcement personnel collected several pieces of evidence from the area as part of the investigation.

At around 2:45pm, Sadar constituency MP Monirul Haque Chowdhury visited the scene and instructed police to take swift action to apprehend those responsible.

The detained Tuhin was being questioned by police, while arrangements were under way to send Opratim’s body to the morgue of Comilla Medical College Hospital for an autopsy.

After visiting the scene, Superintendent of Police Md Anisuzzaman said investigators were working to establish the motive and identify everyone involved in the killing.

The incident has left teachers and students at Comilla University deeply shocked, while the alleged killing of the schoolboy has added to concerns over public safety and the deteriorating law and order situation.
