20 injured in Sirajganj clash over mayoral race

In Sirajganj district town, supporters of two potential mayoral candidates in the upcoming municipality elections clashed in several phases on Friday afternoon.

At least 20 people were injured in clashes between residents of Dhanbandi and Bhangbari neighbourhoods on Mujib Road in the town. During the clashes, Mujib Road, a major commercial area, turned into a battleground, causing panic among local residents. Shops in the vicinity were also closed. Police fired several rounds of tear gas shells to bring the situation under control.

The injured were receiving treatment at various local hospitals and clinics, including Sirajganj 250-Bed General Hospital and Sirajganj North Bengal Medical College Hospital.

Two seriously injured people were shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and Enayetpur Khwaja Yunus Ali Medical College Hospital for better treatment.

Mohammad Rakibul Islam, officer-in-charge of Sirajganj Sadar Police Station, said, “As soon as we received the news, police went to the spot and fired tear gas shells to bring the situation under control.

Additional police have been deployed at important locations to prevent any untoward incident. The exact cause of the clash and the number of people injured are being investigated.”

Mohammad Najran Rauf, additional superintendent of police of Sadar Circle, could not be reached for comment despite several attempts on his official mobile phone.

According to police, eyewitnesses and local sources, it was alleged that a supporter of District BNP General Secretary Saidur Rahman Bachchu verbally abused a leader of the municipality Volunteers’ Party over the phone. In protest, supporters of municipality Volunteers’ Party General Secretary Sanwar Hossain Sanu brought out a protest procession from the Dhanbandi area.

Clashes broke out with supporters of the other side when the procession reached Mujib Road after crossing Elliott Bridge and the intersection in the town. At one point, tension spread across the area as the two groups threw bricks at each other and chased one another.

On receiving the information, a large number of police personnel led by District Superintendent of Police Saiful Islam, Sadar Circle Additional Superintendent of Police Mohammad Najran Rauf and Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Rakibul Islam reached the spot. Police fired tear gas shells and dispersed both groups.

According to local sources, tensions have been ongoing for a long time between supporters of District BNP General Secretary Saidur Rahman Bachchu and former municipality councillor and chairman of the Abdus Sattar Foundation, Abdus Sattar, over the upcoming municipality elections. Personal disputes between supporters of the two sides have also contributed to the conflict, they said.
