Parliamentary committee seeks halt to financing for illegal brick kilns

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change has recommended stopping financing from Bangladesh Bank for illegal brick kilns as part of measures to curb environmental pollution.

The recommendation was made at the first meeting of the committee of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad held at the Cabinet Room of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban on Saturday.

Committee Chairman and Jatiya Sangsad Whip Md GK Gaus chaired the meeting.
The committee decided to send a letter to Bangladesh Bank regarding the recommendation.

It also instructed the Department of Environment (DoE) to prepare a nationwide list of all legal and illegal brick kilns.

The committee further recommended that blocks be used instead of bricks in government infrastructure projects currently under construction.

The meeting held a comprehensive discussion on measures to control environmental pollution and instructed the ministry to exercise caution so that its decisions did not cause harm to the environment.

The committee also instructed the ministry to provide data and information at its next meeting on 101 projects being implemented under the Climate Change Trust.

It sought details of how funds allocated to the ministry had been spent over the past 16 years and called for joint efforts to implement the election manifesto of the current government.

The committee also reviewed in detail the spending plan for the ministry’s allocation in the current fiscal year.

Minister for Environment, Forests and Climate Change Abdul Awal Mintoo, State Minister Sheikh Faridul Islam, and lawmakers Md Zahidul Islam Dhulu, Md Abdul Mannan and Sultana Jesmin attended the meeting.

The meeting began with a recitation from the Holy Quran, followed by an introductory session involving the committee chairman, members and senior officials of the ministry and committee.

The acting secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, additional secretaries, senior officials of the Forest Department and Department of Environment, and concerned senior officials of the Jatiya Sangsad Secretariat were also present.
