104-year-old Nur sent to jail

A Dhaka court has sent 104-year-old Md. Nur Muhammad to jail in a double-murder case stemming from a robbery at a jewellery shop in Kishoreganj in 2000.

Justice Farzana Yasmin of Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-4 passed the order on Tuesday after Nur Muhammad surrendered before the court.

The trial court had initially sentenced Nur Muhammad to death in the case. However, following the death reference proceedings, the High Court later reduced his sentence to 10 years’ imprisonment.

The murder case was filed with Kishoreganj Police Station on December 30, 2000, by jewellery shop owner Md. Ferdous.

According to the case documents, Shahid Mia, Shamsuddin and Ferdous jointly operated a jewellery shop at Popular Store in Kishoreganj. The shop had eight employees.

After conducting Eid business until around 1am on December 30, 2000, the shop owners left Tk 12.5 lakh in cash and 110 bhori of gold in the shop’s safe. Mosharraf Hossain and A. Kabir remained at the shop overnight.

Later that night, a group of robbers entered the shop and looted the cash and gold. When Mosharraf and Kabir resisted, the robbers killed them before fleeing with the valuables.
