Saifur Rahman’s 17th death anniv observed

The 17th death anniversary of former finance and planning minister M Saifur Rahman has been observed on Saturday.

Various programmes were organised to mark the occasion by the M Saifur Rahman Memorial Council, the late leader’s family and his political party, the BNP.

On Saturday the Memorial Council and the family paid tribute at his ancestral home in Baharmardan, Sadar Upazila, through Quran recitation and the laying of floral wreaths at his grave.

Subsequently, a Milad and Dua Mahfil (religious gathering and prayer) was held, followed by the distribution of Shirni (traditional offerings).

National Parliament Whip Alhaj G K Gaus; M Nasser Rahman, MP for Moulvibazar-3 and son of M Saifur Rahman; Alhaj Shawkatul Islam Shoku, MP for Moulvibazar-2; Syed Toufiq Ahmad, president of the M Saifur Rahman Memorial Council; Dr Abdul Matin Chowdhury, general secretary and public prosecutor (PP) of the District Judge Court; Md Faizul Karim Mayun, convener of the District BNP; Abdur Rahim Ripon, member secretary; and Mizanur Rahman Mizan, administrator of the District Council, were present on the occasion.

Moulvibazar Sadar Upazila BNP President Mujibur Rahman Majnu, General Secretary Maruf Ahmad, Municipal BNP President Oliur Rahman and General Secretary Monowar Ahmed Rahman, along with members of M Saifur Rahman’s family and other BNP leaders, were also present.

To mark the death anniversary, financial grants and certificates were awarded to meritorious but financially disadvantaged students who achieved GPA-5 in the SSC examinations. A free eye camp was also organised as part of the day-long programme.

M Saifur Rahman died on September 5, 2009, following a road accident at Khariyala on the Dhaka-Sylhet Highway in Brahmanbaria district while travelling to Dhaka from his home in Baharmardan, Moulvibazar. He drowned after the vehicle carrying him plunged into a roadside ditch.
