I had no choice but to play the familiar role: Taapsee

Taapsee Pannu has carved a niche for herself in Bollywood by playing the role of a strong, independent woman. Her characters in films like ‘Pink’, ‘Thappad’, ‘Badla’, ‘Mulk’, ‘Haseen Dilruba’ have repeatedly challenged conventional social norms.

But that identity is now becoming a bit of a ‘cage’ for her. The actress does not want to play same character over and over again. Rather, she wants to portray herself differently on screen.

In a recent interview, she said that there is still a tendency in the industry to lock actresses into a specific genre.

Taapsee says, “Everyone is going back to their comfortable place, following the tested method.” In such a situation, when a film proposal comes to her, if she doesn’t like the story or character, she doesn’t just say ‘no’.

She directly tells the producers that if the audience can already guess the outcome of the film, then taking her in that film might not be good for the film.
