Govt moves to regulate harmful online content
The government is working with social media companies and other stakeholders to regulate harmful online content and protect the country’s youth from digital distractions, Post, Telecommunications and Information Technology Minister Faqir Mahbub Anam said on Friday.
He said the initiative was aimed at strengthening oversight of social media platforms amid growing concerns over excessive screen use, harmful content and the misuse of artificial intelligence.
The minister made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at a publication programme at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium on the premises of Dhaka University’s Faculty of Fine Arts.
Highlighting global moves to limit social media access for younger users, Faqir Mahbub Anam said restrictions were increasingly being considered for teenagers aged 14 to 16 to address the harmful effects of excessive screen time.
“Today, young people are drifting away from reading books due to excessive smartphone usage,” he said.
The minister also raised concerns over harmful and vulgar content available on platforms such as TikTok and YouTube, as well as the misuse of artificial intelligence (AI).
He said such trends were contributing to disruptions in family life.
“The ICT Ministry is collaborating with social media companies and relevant stakeholders to establish proper oversight and safeguard our future generation,” he added.
The minister also stressed the importance of encouraging young people to read books and remain connected with the country’s history and heritage.
He urged the younger generation to learn about historical figures who had made significant contributions to nation-building and social welfare.
Faqir Mahbub Anam further called for greater emphasis on public service and community initiatives, saying such contributions should be highlighted to inspire young people to engage in positive social action.
