Two Satkhira jail escapees arrested

Police have arrested two inmates who escaped from Satkhira District Jail on August 5, 2024, following the fall of the government.

The arrestees are Mozam Gazi, son of late Mohammad Gazi of Srifalkati village in Shyamnagar upazila, and Rafiqul Islam Gazi, son of Aber Gazi of Nawabeki village in the same upazila. They were arrested in separate drives at around 8:30pm and 10:30pm on Tuesday (August 11) from Srifalkati under Ishwaripur Union and Nawabeki under Atulia Union in Shyamnagar.

Police Station Officer-in-Charge Safiul Islam Patwari fugitive Mozam Gazi had been serving a jail sentence in a cheque dishonour case at Satkhira Jail. Rafiqul Islam had also been sentenced to 10 months in jail and fined Tk 9.80 lakh in another cheque dishonour case.

According Police Station Officer-in-Charge Safiul Islam Patwari, the two inmates escaped from Satkhira Jail after it was attacked and broken open following the fall of the government on August 5, 2024.

After the escape, Mozam and Rafiqul returned to their respective villages in Shyamnagar and had been living in hiding. Police later arrested them based on intelligence information on Tuesday night.

Shyamnagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Safiul Islam Patwari said the two fugitives were arrested based on intelligence information on Tuesday night. They were sent to the Satkhira court jail on Wednesday.

Police operations are underway to arrest other fugitives who escaped from the jail.

Meanwhile, on August 15, 2024, jail authorities filed a case against 87 inmates who escaped after vandalising and looting Satkhira Jail following the fall of the government on August 5.

Of them, 46 have since been arrested in various drives by law enforcement agencies, while 41 had remained at large for nearly two years.
