63 foreign nationals remanded in Chattogram

A Chattogram court on Tuesday granted a two-day police remand for 63 foreign nationals arrested over their alleged involvement in an online fraud operation in the city’s Khulshi area.

Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Mahibul Islam passed the order following a hearing, according to Chattogram Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (Prosecution) Mohammad Hasan Iqbal Chowdhury. Police had initially petitioned on Sunday (September 13) for a seven-day remand to interrogate the suspects.

The arrests were made on Friday (September 11) during a raid on an eight-storey building in the Krishnachura Residential Area under Khulshi Police Station. Law enforcement officers recovered 134 mobile phones, 57 laptops, and various other electronic devices from the premises. No passports were found in the possession of any of the detainees.

The group includes citizens from China, Pakistan, Laos, Nepal, and Vietnam.

Police stated that the suspects were residing in the Khulshi building to conduct online fraudulent activities. A case has been registered with Khulshi Police Station, and investigators sought the remand to gather crucial information regarding the network and its operations.
