Dengue death toll rises to 61 this year

The country has recorded two more deaths from dengue in a 24-hour count, taking this year’s official toll from the mosquito-borne disease to 61.

Seven of those deaths occurred in August alone.

Over the past 24 hours, 672 dengue patients were admitted to hospitals nationwide between 8am Saturday and 8am Sunday, according to the Directorate General of Health Services.

Of them, 110 were admitted in hospitals in Dhaka North City Corporation and 91 in Dhaka South. Another 66 were admitted outside the two city corporations.

Among the divisions, Khulna recorded the highest admissions at 140, followed by Chattogram with 88 and Barishal with 84.

Meanwhile, 511 patients were discharged after recovery in the past 24 hours.

Since Jan 1, 19,345 dengue patients have been hospitalised and 17,044 have recovered, health directorate data show.

Dhaka South has recorded the highest deaths this year at 20, followed by Khulna with 10. In 2023, Bangladesh recorded its highest-ever dengue toll, with 1,705 deaths and 321,179 hospitalisations.
Last year, more than 400 people died and around 102,000 were hospitalised.
