BARI celebrates 50th anniversary
The 50th anniversary celebration of the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) was inaugurated. BARI Director General Dr. Md. Monjurul Kadir inaugurated the 50-year celebration by cutting a cake in front of the headquarters, in the presence of all scientists, officers, staff, and workers.
The Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) is the largest multi-crop research institute in the country.
With the goal of achieving food and nutrition security through increased overall agricultural production, increasing farmers’ income, and creating employment, this institute has been conducting research and development activities on 212 crops, including cereal crops, tuber crops, pulses, oilseeds, vegetables, fruits, and flowers.
BARI scientists have developed 1,373 technologies, which include 681 high-yielding varieties of various crops (including hybrids), disease-resistant and stress-tolerant varieties, and 692 other production technologies.
As a result of these technological innovations, the production of oilseeds, pulses, potato, vegetables, spices, and fruits has increased significantly in the country.
The contribution of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman is undeniable behind this remarkable transformation of agriculture. In this regard, Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman deserves special recognition.
Through the Presidential Ordinance No. 62, he established BARI as a full-fledged autonomous institution on August 4, 1976. Through this, he strengthened the institutional foundation of agricultural research in Bangladesh. He deeply believed that scientific research is essential for long-term food security and national development.
By granting institutional autonomy to agricultural research, his government created an environment where science and innovation could flourish independently.
BARI’s 50-year journey proves that extraordinary success is possible with visionary leadership, dedicated scientists, and proper patronage. BARI’s glorious legacy will inspire future generations of scientists, policymakers, and farmers to build an even stronger, more innovative, and world-class agricultural system.
