Microplastics detected in toothpaste: Govt must take urgent steps in this matter
IT is deeply concerning that harmful microplastics have been detected the majority of toothpaste brands sold in our domestic market.
These tiny plastic particles have been detected not only in products for adults but also in those formulated for children. One does not need to be an expert to understand that these minuscule particles could pose a significant threat to public health.
A study by the non-governmental research organization – Environment and Social Development Organization (ESDO) – reveals the presence of 20 to as many as 320 microplastic particles in every 100 grams of toothpaste.
The further concern is that, due to the absence of national standards, approved limits, or mandatory labeling policies regarding microplastic levels in toothpaste, manufacturers are not obliged to disclose information on this matter.
A national newspaper, quoting the study results, reveals that harmful microplastics are entering our bodies unknowingly through toothpaste. Since we brush our teeth at least once a day, specifically in the morning, we begin our day by introducing toxins into our bodies. Needless to say, microplastics are nothing short of poison.
According to the study, 34 toothpaste samples across 19 brands were examined; microplastics were detected in 26 of them-representing 76.5 percent of the samples. The situation is identical for both domestically produced and imported toothpastes.
Bangladesh Environment Department, BSTI and other relevant institutions can take necessary measures in this regard after consulting with experts.
Examples of effective toothpastes made from various natural and mineral substances in the country and abroad. That, too, could certainly be followed.
Reportedly, microplastics released from toothpaste during brushing do not merely affect individual health; they can spread into the environment through wastewater and enter rivers, water bodies, and the food chain.
There is also a risk of these tiny plastic particles entering the human body through food and beverages, potentially posing risks to the respiratory and digestive systems, the immune system, cardiovascular health, the nervous system, and reproductive health.
Experts say fluoride, carbonate, and silica are essential for dental care; while microplastics can whiten teeth due to their abrasive properties, they also have an adverse and damaging effect on tooth enamel. Although such tiny plastic particles are present in toothpastes from other countries, they are found only in limited quantities.
We know that microplastics are harmful to both the human body and the environment; that is why many countries-including the United Kingdom, Canada, and the United States-have banned microbeads in toothpaste and cosmetics. We believe that hygiene and cosmetic products should not contain such harmful ingredients.
