Midnight gun attack injures HSC student

An 18-year-old HSC student was critically injured after unidentified assailants opened fire on him in the Manikdi area under Cantonment Police Station in Dhaka shortly after midnight on Tuesday, prompting a police investigation into the shooting.

Md Karim, a second-year HSC student at Mirpur Bangla College, was shot in both legs at around 12:15am while returning home after visiting a nearby shop, according to his family.

He was first taken to a private hospital in Kurmitola by local residents before being transferred to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where doctors performed surgery during the night.

Karim’s father, Rafiqul Islam, said he had sent his son to buy mosquito coils from a nearby shop.
After making the purchase, Karim spent some time talking with his friend Tuhin before starting for home.

As he walked past a building locally known as “32 Malik’s Building” in the Amtala area, unidentified assailants allegedly emerged from the darkness and fired indiscriminately, hitting him in both legs.

Doctors at DMCH removed a bullet from Karim’s right leg during surgery. The bullet that struck his left leg reportedly exited his body at the scene.
