‘Padma Barrage project to be opened between Jan and March’
Water Resources Minister Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie has announced that the construction work for the Padma Barrage will be inaugurated between January and March of next year.
He made this statement to reporters on Friday morning (September 11) after inspecting the proposed construction site at Habaspur in Pangsha Upazila, Rajbari.
Water Resources Minister Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie stated, “The implementation of the Padma Barrage project will bring about an agricultural revolution in this region. Alongside this, electricity and fish production will increase, and various facilities based on modern technology will be introduced.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman may inaugurate the Padma Barrage project between January and March of next year.”
Stating that the implementation of the mega ‘Padma Barrage Project’ would bring about economic transformation and a revolution, the Water Resources Minister said, “This will lead to economic transformation across 24 districts, spark an agricultural revolution, and facilitate power generation, fish farming, and increased production.”
He further added, “Many more modern technologies will be incorporated. We have advanced this project-which has been under study since 2004, dating back to the tenure of the late former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia-to the point where it was finally approved by ECNEC in 2026.”
Referring to the BNP’s election manifesto, Annie said, “The Prime Minister had made this promise to you before the election and had included it in the election manifesto.” “Today, it is being realized through her efforts. On behalf of the Ministry of Water Resources and the 24 districts, I extend my gratitude to the Prime Minister.”
Also present on the occasion were the Prime Minister’s Adviser on Finance and Planning Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir, State Minister for Water Resources Farhad Hossain Azad, State Minister for Cultural Affairs Ali Nawaz Mahmud Khaiyam, and Member of Parliament for the Rajbari-2 constituency Harun-or-Rashid.
