Two killed in Sherpur road crash

An autorickshaw driver and his passenger were killed in a road accident in Nalitabari upazila of Sherpur early Saturday.

The accident occurred around 3:00am in the Sannyasibhita area on the Sherpur-Nalitabari road, near the Baghber Union Parishad office.

The victims were identified as autorickshaw driver Kamrul Hossain, 40, son of Ekdil Hossain of Khariapara village under Baghber Union, and passenger Shahidul Islam, 40, son of Abdus Sattar of Salehabad Krishnapatti village.

Police and local residents said Shahidul arrived in Nalitabari from Dhaka at around 2:30am. He then hired Kamrul’s autorickshaw to travel to his in-laws’ house in Sagaradi Krishnapatti under Pachgaon Union.

The vehicle crashed while travelling through the Sannyasibhita area. Local residents later found the damaged autorickshaw beside a pile of sand stored along the roadside and informed police.

Police recovered the victims and the wrecked vehicle and took them to Nalitabari Police Station.

Investigators suspect the autorickshaw may have hit the roadside sand pile due to poor visibility in the darkness. Police are also examining whether an unidentified heavy vehicle struck the three-wheeler.

Nalitabari Police Station Sub-Inspector Abdul Hannan said an investigation was underway to determine the exact cause of the accident.

The bodies were handed over to their families after inquest reports were completed. The families had applied to receive the bodies for burial without post-mortem examinations.
