Deputy Speaker of the National Parliament Barrister Kaiser Kamal has called upon Members of Parliament to play a more effective and people-oriented role in implementing the commitments of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD).
He made this call while presiding over an awareness workshop titled ‘Parliament’s Role in Realising SDGs and ICPD Commitments,’ held at the National Parliament on Sunday.
Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad (Bir Bikram) attended the workshop as the chief guest, while Chief Whip Md. Nurul Islam Moni was the special guest, and Barrister Md. Golam Sarwar Bhuiyan, Secretary of the National Parliament Secretariat, delivered the welcome address. Whips, Members of Parliament, UNFPA representatives, and officials and staff of the National Parliament Secretariat were present at the event. At the beginning of his speech, the Deputy Speaker expressed deep condolences over the death of Barrister Jamiruddin Sircar, a former Acting President and former Speaker of the National Parliament of Bangladesh. He prayed for the salvation of the deceased’s soul and conveyed his sympathies to the bereaved family members.
Barrister Kaiser Kamal stated that he participated in the workshop not only as the Deputy Speaker but also as a Member of Parliament.
He emphasized that such workshops should not be limited to mere formalities; instead, the knowledge and experience gained must be translated into practical action plans and implemented in respective constituencies to actively engage the public.
Urging Members of Parliament to identify issues in their respective constituencies and inform the relevant project authorities, the Deputy Speaker stated that it is possible to engage the youth in preventing child marriage and enhancing climate resilience through school-based public awareness programs. Direct participation by Members of Parliament would make these initiatives even more effective.
He expressed hope that the implementation of the workshop’s recommendations would further strengthen the role of the National Parliament in fulfilling commitments related to the SDGs and the ICPD.
