Chattogram gears up for local polls

Preparations for the upcoming local government elections in Chattogram are gradually gaining momentum from upazila headquarters to remote villages.

Potential candidates for Union Parishad, municipality and upazila elections have intensified their public engagement activities ahead of the polls.

Following the national parliamentary elections, aspiring candidates from various political parties have increased their presence in their respective areas, holding meetings with local residents and community leaders and participating in social, cultural, religious and political events.

Reports from different parts of Chattogram’s 15 upazilas, 15 municipalities and 194 union parishads indicate that prospective chairman and mayoral candidates are visiting their constituencies regularly and making development promises while expanding their involvement in social and humanitarian activities.

According to the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives, local government elections across the country may be held in phases from September or October after the monsoon season.

The government plans to conduct elections to Union Parishads, municipalities, upazilas, district councils and city corporations, with Union Parishad elections likely to be held first.

Officials at the Chattogram District Election Office said preparations for the elections have already begun.

Polling stations are being inspected and updated lists are being prepared. Voter lists for the Union Parishad, municipality and upazila elections are also being updated.

Chattogram Senior District Election Officer Mohammad Bashir Ahmed said, “We are making all necessary preparations for the local government elections, including inspecting polling stations and updating voter lists.”
