Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has stepped up vigilance ahead of the June 23 founding anniversary of the Awami League, saying that although no specific security threat has been detected, law enforcement agencies remain on alert to ensure public safety.
Speaking at a media briefing held at the DMP Media Centre on Minto Road on Friday morning, DMP Additional Commissioner (Crime and Operations) SN Nazrul Islam said necessary security arrangements have already been put in place across the capital. Responding to questions from journalists, he said June 23 marks the founding anniversary of a political party and police are maintaining heightened vigilance surrounding the occasion.
“June 23 is the founding anniversary of a political party. We are on alert centring on the day,” he said.
Nazrul Islam said security checkpoints are operating at various locations in Dhaka and will continue functioning as part of efforts to preserve law and order and maintain public security.
Addressing another question regarding alleged extortionist “Kalya Faruk,” who was arrested in Mohammadpur and later released on bail before allegedly resuming extortion activities, the DMP official said decisions relating to bail rest solely with the judiciary. “Whether they will punish someone or not is a matter for the court. But we will continue to do our job,” he said.
He added that police operations against terrorists, drug traffickers and extortionists would continue, with those arrested being produced before the court for legal proceedings.
