DNCC pushes to reduce urban noise
Authorities have announced stricter enforcement measures against noise pollution in areas designated as silent zones, with the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport area set to face immediate monitoring and legal action against violators.
Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Administrator Safiqul Islam Khan made the announcement while addressing a noise-awareness rally and gathering at Gulshan-2 Circle on the occasion of World Environment Day on Friday.
The programme was jointly organised by the DNCC, Department of Environment (DoE), Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) and the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA).
Declaring a zero-tolerance approach, Safiqul Islam said the airport area had already been designated a silent zone and that enforcement would begin immediately.
“The airport area has been declared a silent zone, no noise pollution will be tolerated there. Anyone violating the law will face action in accordance with law,” he said.
He also noted that Gulshan, Banani, Niketan and Baridhara have been designated as silent zones and stressed the importance of public participation in reducing both noise and air pollution across the capital.
Highlighting ongoing environmental initiatives, Department of Environment Director General Dr Lutfor Rahman outlined measures being implemented to control noise pollution. Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) of DMP Anisur Rahman said the Traffic Division had strengthened its efforts after being empowered under the Noise Pollution Control Rules, 2025. He expressed optimism that residents would gradually benefit from the measures and urged citizens to cooperate with authorities in implementing noise-control initiatives.
Representatives from local community organisations, government agencies, environmental groups and civil society organisations attended the programme.
The initiative comes as authorities seek to improve urban environmental conditions through stricter enforcement of pollution-control regulations and greater public awareness.
