Illegal nets worth Tk 1.9m seized in Nandail, two held
Illegal China-made duari nets and current nets worth approximately Tk 1.9 million were seized and destroyed during a mobile court operation in Nandail upazila of Mymensingh on Tuesday. Two traders were also sentenced to one year in prison each for storing and selling the banned fishing gear.
The operation was conducted by Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and Executive Magistrate Fatema Jannat at two warehouses and a shop in the Nandail Chourasta Bazar area. Senior Fisheries Officer Shahna Naznin and Assistant Fisheries Officer Mozammel Haque were present during the drive.
According to the executive magistrate, a search of the two warehouses led to the recovery of a large quantity of prohibited fishing nets.
while 26 banned nets were seized from a local shop.
After admitting to storing the illegal nets for sale, traders Mosharraf Hossain and Imran were each sentenced to one year of imprisonment and handed over to police for further legal procedures.
Assistant Fisheries Officer Mozammel Haque said that China-made duari nets worth around Tk 1.5 million and current nets worth approximately Tk 400,000 were seized during the operation and later destroyed.
He added that similar enforcement drives against illegal fishing gear would continue throughout the fishing season to protect aquatic resources and ensure compliance with fisheries regulations.
In a separate case, another trader, Ratan Mia, was fined Tk 5,000 for possessing and selling banned fishing nets at his shop.
