Probe launched after deaths of six newborns
The government has said legal action will be taken over the deaths of six newborns at Ad-Din Medical College Hospital in Dhaka, following the findings of ongoing investigation committees.
Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Sakhawat Husain said on Monday, a probe committee formed by the Health Ministry is already investigating the incident, while the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) is also preparing to form another committee to conduct a parallel inquiry.
The minister said the DGHS-led committee is expected to be formed immediately after the Eid holidays and will submit its report within three days. He added that investigators will also speak with the mothers of the deceased newborns to ensure a thorough review of the incident.
The Health Ministry has also sought legal guidance from the Attorney General on how the investigation should proceed under existing laws. Officials said discussions with legal authorities focused on identifying accountability and ensuring that those responsible face appropriate action.
Attorney General Ruhul Quddus Kazal said legal experts have been included in the process to ensure that no procedural gaps allow anyone to avoid responsibility. He expressed hope that the investigation would establish the facts and prevent similar incidents in the future.
According to officials, the inquiry committee is expected to submit its report by June 3. Authorities also said they are reviewing administrative matters related to licences issued for activities on hospital premises.
The deaths of six newborns occurred on May 27 in the postnatal ward of the hospital in Dhaka’s Moghbazar area, prompting widespread concern and the current multi-level investigation.
