Kishoreganj youth killed in Russia mine blast

A 27-year-old man from Karimganj upazila of Kishoreganj was killed in a mine explosion while fighting for Russia.

The deceased was identified as Md. Jahangir Hossain (27), son of Habibur Rahman of Kandail-Bagpara under Joyka Union in Karimganj upazila.

Family members said Jahangir died in a mine explosion in a Russian-controlled area near the Ukraine border on May 18.

Two other Bangladeshis were reportedly killed and one injured in the same incident.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Karimganj Police Station, Emranul Kabir, confirmed that a friend from Russia informed the family about the death through a video message on Friday afternoon.

The victim’s younger brother, Javed, said a friend of theirs in Russia confirmed the death through a video message.

The friend is currently working at an army camp and lives in Tangail district. He also claimed that two more Bangladeshis were killed and one was injured in the same incident.

The other two deceased were Md. Suruj Kazi of Madaripur and Md. Yusuf Khan of Comilla.

In the video message, the friend claimed that they were sent to Russia through an agency with the promise of jobs.

Later, they were allegedly connected to the Russian army in various ways and sent to the battlefield. The agency is being blamed for the incident.

The victim’s wife, Mashuka, said that Jahangir went to Russia hoping for a better life for his family, but was instead sent to war, which devastated the entire family.

Earlier, on May 2, another Bangladeshi from the same upazila, Riyad Rashid, was killed in a drone attack on the Russia-Ukraine border.
