Tanjim Murder Case: 4 get death penalty

A court has sentenced four convicts to death and nine others to life imprisonment in the murder case of army officer Lieutenant Tanjim Sarwar Nirjon. Five other accused in the case were acquitted.

The verdict was delivered on Wednesday by Judge Mohammad Abul Mansur Siddiqui of the 5th Additional District and Sessions Judge Court in Cox’s Bazar. At the time of sentencing, 12 of the 18 accused were present in court.

In the same verdict, the accused received various prison terms in a separate arms case.
The verdict was confirmed by Public Prosecutor Advocate Khorshed Alam Chowdhury of the 5th Court.
According to court sources, one of the four death row convicts Morshed Alam remains a fugitive.

Senior lawyer Mohammad Jahangir and the Additional Public Prosecutor confirmed that the prosecution presented 52 witnesses in the murder case and 46 in the arms case, while the defense called 7 witnesses.

PP Khorshed Alam Chowdhury stated that the verdict was delivered impartially and free from outside influence, following full cross-examination of witnesses by defense counsel, and that the judge took care to ensure no innocent person was punished.

Those sentenced to various terms include Jalal Uddin alias Babul, Mohammad Arif Ullah, Md. Anwar Hakim, Md. Ziabul Karim, Md. Ismail Hossain alias Hossain, Enamul Haq Enam alias Tota Enam, Mohammad Enam, Md. Kamal alias Bindi Kamal, and Abdul Karim alias Md. Karim – the last of whom is also a fugitive.

The charge sheet for both the murder and arms cases was submitted to court on January 19, 2025, with 18 individuals named as accused. Of these, 12 were arrested while 6 remained at large through the time of the verdict.

According to the case filing, on the night of September 23, 2024, around 2:00 AM, a joint forces team conducted an anti-dacoity operation in Dulhazara, Chakaria, Cox’s Bazar. During the operation, Lieutenant Tanjim Sarwar Nirjon of the Army’s 39 ST Battalion chased and physically grabbed two dacoits, who then stabbed him in the neck and body, inflicting critical injuries. He was immediately rushed to the Ramu Combined Military Hospital (CMH), where he was declared dead at 4:50 AM.
