RNPP, NLDC to integrate power control systems

The Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP) is set to be integrated with the National Load Dispatch Centre’s (NLDC) modern SCADA/EMS control system to facilitate the monitoring and management of its electricity transmission system.

A contract was signed on Wednesday between the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC) and GE Vernova to integrate necessary data from the transmission systems of Units 1 and 2 of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, along with its 400kV and 230kV GIS substations, into the NLDC’s SCADA/EMS system.

Under the agreement, eight transmission lines associated with Units 1 and 2, as well as designated critical signals and data from the 400kV and 230kV GIS substations, will be integrated into the NLDC’s SCADA/EMS system.

The technical integration will enable the relevant national grid control centre to receive, monitor and use essential information and signals related to Rooppur’s electricity transmission system.

This is expected to strengthen the reliability of power transmission from the nuclear power plant to the national grid.

Officials concerned said the integration is an important technical step towards ensuring the reliable transmission of electricity generated by the Rooppur plant to the national grid, as well as supporting the proper implementation of its commissioning and subsequent operational activities.

It is worth mentioning that GE Vernova carries out SCADA/EMS integration for power plants across the country. In this context, the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources has also expressed its support for integrating the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant with the NLDC’s SCADA/EMS system through an agreement with GE Vernova.

Currently, post-fuel-loading testing activities are underway at Unit 1 of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant. To ensure that the plant’s scheduled commissioning and subsequent operational activities proceed according to plan, the SCADA/EMS integration needs to be completed on an urgent basis.
