Repatriation only lasting solution to Rohingya crisis

Bangladesh has said the safe and voluntary repatriation of displaced Rohingyas to Myanmar remains the only sustainable solution to the prolonged crisis.

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam made the remarks during a meeting with UN Assistant Secretary-General Khaled Khiari in New York on Thursday, according to the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh to the United Nations.

During the meeting, Bangladesh reaffirmed its commitment to democratic governance, sustainable development, UN peacekeeping and multilateral cooperation.

Shama Obaed briefed the UN official on the priorities of the newly elected government, including restoring public trust, strengthening democratic institutions, ensuring transparency and accountability, improving public services, and upholding human rights and the rule of law.

She also highlighted the government’s social protection initiatives, including the “Family Card” and “Farmers’ Card” programmes, aimed at supporting vulnerable groups.

On the Rohingya issue, the state minister called for continued international support to ensure the safe, dignified and sustainable return of the displaced people to their homeland in Myanmar.

Referring to Bangladesh’s long-standing role in UN peacekeeping, she said peacekeeping mandates must be preserved despite the ongoing liquidity crisis. She also stressed the need for greater participation of women and youth in post-conflict peacebuilding efforts.

Khaled Khiari appreciated Bangladesh’s contribution to UN peacekeeping operations and its efforts to promote women’s participation in peace and security initiatives.
