How Ted Turner transformed the landscape of media world?
We live in a world where wars, disasters, elections, revolutions, and earthquakes can be accessed in a matter of seconds; but the concept of ‘instant news’ was once unimaginable.
When the 6:00pm news ended, people would wait until the next morning.
Media visionary named ‘Ted Turner’ refused to accept that limitation. Rather, he believed that the world never sleeps, so news cannot sleep either.
Ted Turner founded the Cable News Network (CNN) on June 1, 1980, in the United States, changed the way people see, the way they know, and the way they experience time.
His death at the age of 87 on Wednesday, May 6, 2026 at his home in Atlanta, USA, was not just the passing of one of the pioneers of the media; it was the end of an era of news. It was the world’s first 24-hour news channel.
At the time, many called it crazy. Critics mockingly named it “Chicken Noodle News.”
The idea of why people would watch the news all the time was considered unusual at the time.
But to understand Ted Turner’s foresight, we have to remember the Gulf War of 1991.
Then the world saw that war ‘live’ for the first time. Bombs were falling in the sky over Baghdad, and billions of people around the world were witnessing it at the same moment.
At the age of just 24, he took over the family advertising business after the suicide of his father. He turned that small business into a huge media empire.
It is Ted Turner who broke the geographical boundaries of television broadcasting by using satellite technology.
The foundation of today’s global broadcasting system was largely built by him.
In today’s world, the media is going through a terrible crisis. News is often losing its credibility due to rumors, misinformation, political divisions, and commercial competition.
At this time, the life of Ted Turner brings us face to face with this truth – news is the oxygen of democracy.
Ted Turner is no more today; but somewhere in the world, when the light of a newsroom lights up late at night, when a reporter broadcasts live from the battlefield, when people can instantly know the events of distant countries, then somewhere behind that light, Ted Turner’s dream burns.
There is no death of a great man. We will always remember the departed soul of Ted Turner.
