Immunisation Week 2026 highlights vaccine awareness

On the occasion of World Immunization Week 2026, a series of awareness sessions titled “Immunization for All” were held across educational institutions and community settings in Bangladesh, underscoring the importance of vaccines in preventing infectious diseases and strengthening public health.

The initiative, supported by Synovia Pharma PLC, brought together students, educators, and community members to promote greater understanding of immunization and its role in disease prevention.

Vaccination remains one of the most effective public health interventions worldwide. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), vaccines prevent between 3.5 million and 5 million deaths each year globally. In Bangladesh, public awareness around Immunization continues to be critical, particularly in the context of seasonal infectious diseases.

Health experts at the sessions highlighted that influenza follows a distinct seasonal pattern in the country, typically occurring between April and September, with peaks during the monsoon months.
Estimates suggest that influenza contributes to approximately 6 to 11 deaths per 100,000 people annually, with older adults facing a higher risk of severe illness and complications.

Awareness sessions were conducted at institutions including North South University, BRAC University, European Standard School and also in Little Heaven Day-care & Saalim Wisdom School, Dhanmondi.

Speakers emphasised the importance of age-appropriate vaccination and the role of immunization in protecting communities.

In a separate outreach effort, 52 residents aged over 50 at a senior citizens’ home in Dhamrai received influenza vaccinations, highlighting the need to prioritize high-risk groups during the flu season.

Community-based sessions were also held at two schools in the capital, where parents and teachers were engaged in discussions on childhood immunisation and preventive healthcare.

Experts noted that, beyond individual protection, vaccines play a crucial role in reducing the spread of infectious diseases at the community level, contributing to broader public health resilience.
