Mayor takes tough stance on waterlogging in Chattogram
Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain has taken a firm stance to expedite efforts to resolve the city’s persistent waterlogging problem, conducting field inspections and issuing directives against illegal encroachment and poor waste management.
On Tuesday, the mayor visited several areas to monitor ongoing canal and drain cleaning activities. He began with an inspection of the road adjacent to Bahaddarhat Market, where he expressed dissatisfaction over illegal structures occupying public space and ordered their immediate removal.
He later inspected canal renovation work being carried out by the Chattogram Development Authority (CDA) in the Bahaddarhat area. During the visit, he directed employees to remove embankments that were obstructing the natural flow of water. He also instructed the construction of a Bailey bridge to ease movement for local residents.
The mayor subsequently visited Faridar Para in Chandgaon Ward No. 4, where he reviewed canal and drain cleaning operations. He also inspected similar activities in the Khaja Road area under Ward No. 6.
Speaking during the inspections, Dr. Shahadat Hossain emphasized that infrastructure development alone would not solve the problem.
“It is not enough to just implement projects; city residents must also be aware. If waste is dumped indiscriminately, canals and drains will become clogged again, leading to renewed waterlogging,” he said.
City authorities say coordinated efforts and public cooperation are essential to achieving a sustainable solution to waterlogging in Chattogram.
