Special drive conducted to stop bird hunting

A special drive was conducted in different areas of Nakla Union in Sherpur’s Nakla upazila on Wednesday to prevent bird hunting.

The drive was jointly organised by the Wildlife Management and Nature Conservation Division, Sherpur; Sherpur Bird Club; and Shine, a nature and environmental organisation.

The operation began early in the morning and continued for around four hours.
During the drive, hunting equipment was seized from five bird hunters and 10 herons were rescued. The birds were later released into the wild.

Suman Sarkar, Wildlife and Biodiversity Conservation Officer of the Wildlife Management and Nature Conservation Division, Sherpur; Wildlife Ranger Md Abdullah Al Amin; Md Mugniur Rahman Moni, founding president of the Sherpur Bird Club, executive director of Shine and a senior journalist; and volunteers and other members were present during the drive.

Suman Sarkar said such drives would be conducted regularly to prevent bird hunting.
He added that Nakla Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Jahangir Alam had been informed about the drive.

The hunters, residents of Dakatia Kanda village in Nakla Union No. 2, signed undertakings pledging that they would not hunt herons or other birds in the future.

They were warned that legal action could be taken against them if they violated the undertaking.

They were later released into the custody of Muraduzzaman Masum, member secretary of the Nakla upazila unit of Jubo Dal.
