Court orders seizure of Maya’s tax files in graft probe

A court here today ordered the seizure of tax files of former minister and Awami League leader Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya over graft allegations.

Dhaka Metropolitan Special Judge Md Sabbir faiz passed the order, allowing a plea of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

The petition said the accused, Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya, allegedly amassed assets worth around Taka 1.82 crore beyond known sources of income between the 2009-10 and 2023-24 tax years through bribery, corruption, abuse of power and money laundering, and kept those in his possession.

It also alleged that through bank accounts in his own name and in the names of his business entities, he carried out unusual and suspicious transactions amounting to Taka 510.37 crore by way of transfer, conversion and movement of funds. The petition further said that the accused is an income taxpayer and, for the sake of a fair and proper investigation, it is essential to seize all relevant records and information, including the permanent and miscellaneous sections of his original income tax files.
