DSCC begins planned hawker rehab
Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Administrator Abdus Salam on Saturday said steps are underway to bring hawkers under a planned rehabilitation system to end the long-standing public inconvenience caused by their uncontrolled occupation of roads and footpaths.
He said only a specific number of hawkers would be permitted to operate at selected spots on roadsides or footpaths for limited hours, so that both pedestrian movement and vehicular traffic remain unaffected.
Abdus Salam made the statement while speaking at the foundation stone laying ceremony of a road development project in the Haq Residential Society area under DSCC Zone-2.
He attended the event as chief guest, while State Minister for Railways and Road Transport and Highways Division Habibur Rashid Habib was present as special guest.
The development work, financed from DSCC’s own funds, involves construction and renovation of nearly 1.1 kilometres of roads along with pipe drains in several lanes and sub-lanes at a cost of about Tk 3.67 crore.
After inaugurating the project, the DSCC administrator said the present government is focused on visible development work and that the Prime Minister is keeping close watch on the activities of the city corporations.
He also noted that all ongoing civic development schemes would be carried out in consultation with the concerned lawmakers.
Addressing the function, Habibur Rashid Habib said he expects DSCC to meet public expectations through efficient service delivery under the current government.
DSCC officials and local political leaders were also present.
