Prof Supid sent to jail over DU student’s death

A Dhaka court on Monday sent associate professor Sudip Chakraborty to jail in a case filed over the alleged abetment of the suicide of Dhaka University student Munira Mahjabin Mimo.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ripon Hossain passed the order after the investigation officer of Badda Police Station submitted a petition seeking his detention.

The accused, Sudip Chakraborty, was not produced before the court. Although he had been brought to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s lock-up in the morning, he was not presented as no remand prayer was filed, said prosecution officials. During the hearing, defence counsel sought bail, arguing that the accused is a teacher and unaware of the incident, and is being harassed. State lawyers opposed the plea.

According to the investigation officer’s petition, preliminary evidence indicates the accused’s involvement in the incident, making his custody necessary for proper investigation and verification of identity and address. The petition also noted that a remand prayer may be filed later.

It further stated that the accused had communicated with the victim on the night of April 26, and based on the complainant’s allegation, investigators suspect this interaction may have influenced the circumstances leading to her death.

Earlier on Sunday morning, the body of the student was recovered from a residence in North Badda.

The victim’s father later filed a case with Badda Police Station.
