Afzal put on four day remand
A court here today placed former DGFI director and dismissed Lieutenant Colonel Md Afzal Naser on a four-day remand in a case lodged over the killing of one Mahmudul Hasan in Uttara area during the July Mass Uprising, 2024.
After a hearing at the court of Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Sefatullah on Thursday, the judge granted a 7-day remand application and ordered a 4-day remand.
The matter was confirmed by Muhammad Shamsudduha Sumon, Additional Public Prosecutor of Dhaka Metropolitan Court. According to the case documents, on the afternoon of August 5, 2024, an attack and shooting occurred during a procession of anti-discrimination students and people in the Azampur area under Uttara East Police Station.
It is alleged that Afzal Naser along with several other unnamed individuals formed an unlawful assembly and attacked the procession in an armed state.
In the incident, Mahmudul Hasan (26) was shot and seriously injured.
He was later taken to Bangladesh Kuwait Maitree Government Hospital, where the attending physician declared him dead. His body was subsequently buried at his home.
In connection with the incident, a relative of the victim filed a murder case at Uttara East Police Station under multiple sections of the Penal Code.
Officials involved in the investigation stated that preliminary investigation has revealed information regarding the accused’s involvement, and it is hoped that the main mystery of the incident will be uncovered through interrogation.
Prior to this, Afzal Naser was arrested in the early hours of March 30, 2026. He is currently in judicial custody.
