BRRI holds seminar on Nitrogen Management

A seminar on nitrogen management, one of the key challenges to sustainable agriculture in Bangladesh and South Asia, was held at the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) auditorium in Gazipur on Wednesday.

The seminar was titled “Nitrogen Status in South Asian Agriculture: Losses, Use Efficiency and the Potential to Halve Nitrogen Waste.”

The seminar was chaired by Dr Md Monwar Karim Khan, president of the Bangladesh Soil Science Society. Gazipur Agricultural University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr GKM Mostafizur Rahman, BRRI Director General Dr Md Rafiqul Islam, noted soil scientist Dr Md Shahidul Islam, Professor Dr M Zahiruddin, and BRRI Director (Administration and General Care) Dr Aminul Islam took part in the discussion.

Professor Dr Md Mizanur Rahman of the Department of Soil Science at Gazipur Agricultural University presented the keynote paper. Heads of BRRI’s various research divisions and regional offices.

scientists, researchers, academics and members of the Bangladesh Soil Science Society attended the seminar.

In his keynote presentation, Professor Dr Md Mizanur Rahman highlighted the current status of nitrogen use and losses in South Asian agriculture, the low nitrogen-use efficiency and the environmental and economic losses caused by the imbalanced use of nitrogen fertilisers.

He particularly stressed increasing the use of slow- or controlled-release fertilisers, such as urea super granules and neem-coated urea, organic inputs such as biochar and vermicompost, the alternate wetting and drying (AWD) method, and nano urea to improve the efficiency of nitrogen fertiliser use in agriculture.

The participants pledged to strengthen mutual cooperation and research activities to reduce nitrogen waste and losses, improve nitrogen-use efficiency, protect the environment, and ensure sustainable agricultural production and food security across South Asia.
