Congratulations Mirza Fakhrul

A President for a New Chapter

THE election of Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as the 23rd President of Bangladesh marks an important moment in the country’s political journey.

We extend our warm congratulations to the newly elected President and wish him wisdom, strength and good health as he assumes the highest constitutional office of the republic.

Fakhrul’s victory, secured with 255 votes against Col. (Retd.) Oli Ahmed’s 88 in Bangladesh’s first contested presidential election in 35 years, comes at a particularly significant juncture.

As the country continues to navigate the political and institutional consequences of the 2024 uprising and the transition towards a more competitive political environment, the presidency must serve as a source of stability, constitutional balance and national unity.

Few politicians appear as naturally suited to such a responsibility as Fakhrul.

His political career, spanning more than five decades, has taken him from the student movements of the 1960s and the Liberation War to Parliament, the Cabinet and the leadership of the BNP.

Through years of political turbulence, arrests and confrontation, he has generally been recognised for his restraint and composure.
His personal history also gives the presidency an unusual depth.

A freedom fighter with roots in the political left, a teacher of economics and a senior figure in a nationalist political party, Fakhrul’s life does not fit easily into Bangladesh’s often polarised political categories.

His relative reluctance to publicise his wartime role is, in itself, a reflection of a political temperament that values service over spectacle.

That temperament will now be tested in Bangabhaban. Bangladesh needs a President capable of rising above partisan competition and embodying the dignity of the constitutional office.

The presidency should not become another arena for political confrontation; rather, it should help strengthen democratic institutions, protect constitutional principles and foster dialogue among competing political forces.

Fakhrul has spoken of a prosperous, welfare-oriented and secure Bangladesh, with greater opportunities for young people, workers, marginalised communities and women. These aspirations are shared by millions.

The nation now expects the new President to translate that vision into a presidency defined by impartiality, dignity and reconciliation.

His election offers an opportunity to begin a new chapter-one in which the Bangabhaban becomes not merely a seat of authority, but a symbol of national confidence and democratic stability.

We wish President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir every success in the service of Bangladesh.
