Khulna braces for bumper mango harvest

The Khulna region is witnessing renewed optimism over mango production this season, with officials projecting that output will surpass the set target, thanks to favorable weather and stable growing conditions.

According to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) in Khulna, mango cultivation has expanded across 7,959 hectares in four districts Khulna, Bagerhat, Satkhira, and Narail closely matching last year’s 7,980 hectares, but with significantly improved yield prospects.

The DAE estimates an average yield of 14.54 metric tonnes per hectare this season, potentially pushing total production to around 112,635 metric tonnes.

District-wise data show Satkhira leading with 4,107 hectares under cultivation and an expected yield of approximately 70,900 tonnes. Khulna follows with 19,245 tonnes from 1,492 hectares, while Bagerhat and Narail are projected to produce 15,430 tonnes and 7,060 tonnes from 1,579 and 542 hectares, respectively.

Officials also expect around 75 tonnes of mangoes to be exported this season.
Last year’s production was severely impacted by storms, which caused the loss of over 112,500 tonnes of mangoes.

However, in the absence of major natural disasters so far this year, farmers are expressing cautious optimism.

Although minor damage from hailstorms affected 50 hectares in Satkhira and 12 hectares in Bagerhat, officials believe the losses will not significantly impact overall production.

While no special incentives have been introduced for mango farmers this season, agricultural authorities say that continued favorable weather could help achieve or even exceed the production target.
Local growers remain hopeful, anticipating a bumper harvest if current conditions persist.
