‘A tree for every student’

State Minister for Youth and Sports Md Aminul Haque has urged students across the country to plant at least one tree each, saying records of the trees planted by students will be maintained and additional saplings will be supplied to educational institutions when necessary.

He made the call while addressing a tree plantation programme at Mirpur Girls Ideal Laboratory School and College in the capital on Sunday.

Addressing the students, Aminul said each student should plant a tree at home, at school or college, or along a roadside.

“Records of the trees you plant will also be maintained. There will be a list of trees planted by each school and college,” he said. Describing the current monsoon season as an ideal time for tree plantation, the state minister said saplings planted now would grow quickly due to favourable weather conditions.

He urged students, teachers and guardians to immediately join tree-planting activities. Aminul said tree plantation is essential for maintaining environmental balance and mitigating the impacts of climate change.

He said the school- and college-based plantation programme aims to raise environmental awareness among students and make educational institutions greener. “Our election pledge has a target of planting 250 million trees over the next five years. Everyone must participate in this programme to make the country and cities greener,” he said.

He urged school authorities to encourage students to plant trees alongside their academic activities, saying collective efforts by students could significantly increase the country’s green cover.
