Bangladesh win gold in South Asian TT Champ

Bangladesh U-19 Boys’ team won the gold medal by becoming the group champion in the South Asian Youth Table Tennis (TT) Championship.

With this achievement, the team has qualified to participate in the ITTF-ATTU Asian Youth Championship to be held in Muscat, the capital of Oman, from June 21-27.

The competitions are being held in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, India from April 8-11, Bangladesh defeated the powerful Sri Lanka 3-1 to become the group champion and secure the gold medal.

Although Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal all scored 5 points in the group, Bangladesh took the top spot by leading in set difference.

At the beginning of the match, BKSP’s Abul Hashem Hasib lost 2-3 games to Sri Lanka’s Viandua Akain. However, Bangladesh later turned around.

Nafiz Iqbal defeated Danuk Lamasuriya 3-0. Then Joy Islam took the team ahead by defeating Munasingha Harin 3-0. In the last match, Team Captain Nasif Iqbal defeated Viandua Akain 3-1 to secure the gold.

Bangladesh won the gold medal in the first South Asian Junior held in Maldives in 2022 for the Under-19 Boys.

The members of the gold-winning team then were Muhtasin Ahmed Hridoy, Ramhimlion Bam, Nafiz Reza and Abul Hashem Hasib.

Bangladesh won the silver medal in Arunachal, India in 2023 and Kandy, Sri Lanka in 2024. Bangladesh won the bronze medal in Kathmandu, Nepal last year.
