BD, UK aim to expand trade
The United Kingdom’s Trade Envoy to Bangladesh, Baroness Winterton, has emphasized the strong and longstanding relationship between Dhaka and London, noting that both countries continue to benefit from expanding trade and investment ties.
In a statement on Monday, she expressed optimism about engaging with government officials, business leaders, and entrepreneurs to explore new opportunities that would drive economic growth and shared prosperity.
Baroness Winterton is currently visiting Dhaka on her third trip to Bangladesh, aiming to strengthen and broaden the already well-established bilateral trade and economic partnership.
Her visit comes at a significant time, following the formation of Bangladesh’s new elected government in February.
According to the British High Commission in Dhaka, the visit reflects the UK’s continued commitment to supporting Bangladesh’s transition towards a more diversified, resilient, and high-value economy.
It also highlights cooperation in key sectors such as trade, economic development, higher education, aviation, and defence.
During her visit, the envoy is scheduled to meet senior government officials, military representatives, and business leaders, including those from UK companies operating in Bangladesh.
The discussions will focus on enhancing bilateral trade, increasing investment, and strengthening commercial relations.
She will also visit Bangladeshi export-oriented businesses benefiting from the UK’s Developing Countries Trading Scheme (DCTS), which provides duty-free market access, simplified export rules, and encourages diversification beyond the garment sector.
Bangladesh is currently the largest beneficiary of the DCTS, supplying quality goods to the UK market while supporting employment and sustainable economic growth.
British High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Sarah Cooke, said that shared growth and prosperity remain central to the bilateral relationship, adding that the envoy’s frequent visits reflect the UK’s strong commitment to deepening ties with Bangladesh.
The UK continues to be one of Bangladesh’s top export destinations and a major partner in development and investment.
