BFF to look for new coach
The contract of Bangladesh’s football team Spanish head coach Javier Cabrera ends on April 30.
Cabrera served for more than four years, could not achieve much success. So the demand for his departure has been going on for a year.
The coach’s contract and tenure were discussed, along with other issues, at the National Team Management Committee meeting on Saturday.
The Spanish coach’s contract is due to expire on April 30, 2026. The BFF has indicated that it is unlikely to renew his contract, announcing that the process to appoint a new head coach has already begun.
“We are starting the search for a new coach from today. We will interview candidates. If necessary, Cabrera can also attend the interview.
The committee will then make the decision,” Media Committee Chairman Amirul Islam Babu said.
Cabrera has been serving as head coach of the Men in Red and Green since January 2022.
He is the longest-serving foreign coach in the history of the Bangladesh national football team.
The National Team Management Committee, led by BFF President Tabith Awal, has already started looking for a new coach at home and abroad.
CVs are being sought through different countries’ embassies and other channels.
BFF wants a coach who will be able to quickly understand the ability of Bangladesh’s players and the team’s current style of play.
Cabrera oversaw 39 international matches during his four-year tenure, recording 10 wins, 10 draws and 19 losses.
BFF is planning to arrange matches for the national team in the forthcoming FIFA international window from June 1 to June 9.
‘We will try to play against Thailand or Myanmar – teams of slightly higher quality,’ Babu said, dismissing rumours of a four-nation tournament in the Maldives.
Alongside this, BFF will form a U-23 team, ‘We are preparing to form the Under-23 national team. The most important thing is that this team will remain in continuous practice.’
