Dhanmondi Lake won’t become commercial zone
Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Administrator Abdus Salam on Wednesday reaffirmed his commitment to preserving the natural environment of Dhanmondi Lake and preventing it from becoming a commercial zone.
“Dhanmondi Lake is not a commercial area. Dhaka already faces a severe shortage of open spaces. We want to protect the lake in its original natural form,” he said.
He made the remarks while speaking to journalists after visiting the lake on Wednesday afternoon.
During the visit, Salam expressed concern over the growing number of restaurants and commercial establishments around the lake. He said the area appears to have been overtaken by such businesses, which undermines its natural character.
“Our priority is to preserve nature here. We will take steps to restore a healthy and pleasant environment,” he added.
To improve maintenance, the DSCC administrator announced that a monitoring committee comprising local residents and city officials will be formed within a week. Future development and maintenance work will be guided by the committee’s recommendations.
