FM to visit new Delhi

Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister, Khalilur Rahman, is set to visit New Delhi, the capital of India, on 7-8 April. He will travel to Delhi ahead of attending the Indian Ocean Conference, which is scheduled to be held in Port Louis.

Following the formation of a government under the leadership of Tarique Rahman in February, this will be the first visit to Delhi by a Bangladeshi minister, reports media.

Diplomatic sources indicate that a meeting between Khalilur Rahman and India’s External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, may take place on the very first day of the visit. Discussions are also ongoing regarding meetings with other senior representatives of the Indian government.

A source in Dhaka has stated that the Prime Minister’s Foreign Affairs Adviser, Humayun Kabir, will accompany the Foreign Minister during the visit.

There is also ongoing communication between the two countries regarding the possibility of meetings with India’s National Security Adviser, Ajit Doval; Commerce Minister, Piyush Goyal; and Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri.

According to diplomatic observers, a positive attitude has been observed from Delhi regarding the visit, which signals potential improvement in bilateral relations.

Earlier, after assuming office as Bangladesh’s new Prime Minister, Narendra Modi sent a congratulatory letter to Tarique Rahman, expressing his interest in working together for the welfare of the people of both countries.
