Veg prices down, fish mkt heats up
After Eid-ul-Fitr, prices of summer vegetables have declined in markets across the capital, bringing some relief to consumers.
Alongside vegetables, broiler chicken prices have also decreased, although fish prices continue to remain high.
A visit to several city markets on Friday showed that the price of yardlong beans dropped by Tk 40 per kg to Tk 80, while eggplants are selling between Tk 50 and Tk 80 depending on the variety.
Taro stems have decreased by Tk 20 to Tk 70–80 per kg, bitter gourd is priced between Tk 50 and Tk 80, and okra has dropped by Tk 40 to Tk 60 per kg. Pointed gourd is now Tk 60 per kg after a Tk 20 decrease, while taro roots are selling for Tk 80–100, drumsticks Tk 80–100, and sponge gourd Tk 60–70 per kg. Green chilies are being sold at Tk 80–100 per kg, papaya and pumpkin at Tk 40, and local cucumbers have dropped significantly by Tk 40 to Tk 40–50 per kg, while hybrid cucumbers are priced at Tk 30 per kg. A bunch of lemons is being sold for Tk 30–40.
Meanwhile, some winter vegetables have seen a slight increase in price. Beans have risen by Tk 20 to Tk 60–70 per kg depending on type, tomatoes are selling for Tk 30–50, local carrots Tk 40–50, radish Tk 50, large cauliflowers Tk 40 per piece, cabbage Tk 30 per piece, and bottle gourd Tk 40–60 per piece. Potato prices have increased slightly, with new potatoes rising by Tk 5 to Tk 25 per kg, while onion prices remain stable, with local onions selling for Tk 30–35 per kg and spring onions at Tk 30 per kg.
In the poultry market, Sonali cock chicken is being sold at Tk 400 per kg and Sonali hybrid at Tk 360, while red layer chickens are priced at Tk 330 and white layers at Tk 320. Broiler chicken prices have dropped by Tk 40 to Tk 190 per kg, and local chicken is selling at Tk 700 per kg. Beef is priced at Tk 800 per kg, with liver at the same rate, cow head meat at Tk 450, and tripe between Tk 400 and Tk 450, while mutton is being sold at Tk 1,200 per kg.
However, fish prices continue to remain high in the markets. Hilsa has seen a slight increase, with 300-gram fish selling at Tk 1,200–1,400 per kg and 500-gram fish at Tk 1,800–2,000 per kg. Other fish prices include shing at Tk 350–550 per kg, with local varieties reaching Tk 1,000–1,200, rohu Tk 400–550, magur Tk 800–1,000, mrigal Tk 350–400, pangas Tk 170–200, shrimp Tk 800–1,400, boal Tk 600–800, large katla Tk 400–550, pabda Tk 400–450, tilapia Tk 200, koi Tk 200–220, mola Tk 500, batashi Tk 1,300, tengra Tk 600–800, kachki Tk 500, and mixed small fish Tk 220 per kg. In the egg market, a dozen red eggs are selling for Tk 110–120, duck eggs at Tk 200 per dozen, local chicken eggs at Tk 100 per four, and Sonali chicken eggs at Tk 70 per four.
