Horse meat sold as beef in N’ganj
Law enforcement members have rescued 9 slaughtered and 11 live horses in Rupganj, Narayanganj. The operation took place on Friday morning (March 27) at a plot in the Hararbari area of Sector 10, Purbachal New Town.
Allegations have emerged that a group was fraudulently selling horse meat as beef to various restaurants in Purbachal.
According to Purbachal Police Camp In-Charge Harun Or Rashid and local sources, around 20 horses were brought to the location by an unscrupulous group with the intention of slaughtering them.
They had already slaughtered 9 horses when locals became suspicious early in the morning and alerted the police by calling the national emergency service 999.
Police and other law enforcement agencies conducted a raid at the scene. Sensing their arrival, the culprits fled, leaving the horses behind. A total of 11 live horses and 9 slaughtered horses were recovered.
Confirming the incident, Narayanganj Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police Mehedi Islam said that the rescue was carried out based on local information. However, no suspects could be arrested as they escaped before the police arrived.
He further stated that the group had been operating for a long time, bringing horses to isolated areas of Purbachal at night, slaughtering them, and selling the meat at low prices to local meat shops as beef. Consumers unknowingly purchased and consumed the meat, falling victim to fraud.
