Int’l rights groups demand release of Kabir

Several European and international human rights organisations have urged the Prime Minister of Bangladesh to ensure the release and proper medical treatment of 75-year-old journalist, writer and freedom fighter Shahriar Kabir.

In a statement, the groups said Kabir’s health has significantly worsened due to serious illness, putting him at considerable risk. They noted that his long-standing health problems have led to rapid weight loss and difficulties in movement.

The Lemkin Institute for Genocide Prevention also criticised his detention, saying it violates Bangladesh’s international legal commitments. In a statement issued on January 5, 2026, the institute called for Kabir’s immediate release and recommended that he be provided appropriate compensation.

In a joint appeal, the organisations placed three main demands before the Bangladeshi government: the immediate release of elderly and vulnerable detainees, including Kabir; the provision of urgent and adequate medical care; and strict compliance with international human rights and humanitarian standards in all prisons.

Groups that signed the appeal include the South Asia Democratic Forum, European Bangladesh Forum, Watch Group Bangladesh, Earth Civilization Network, and the Global Platform for Freedom and Justice Alliance, along with several other global civil society organisations.
