Runa Murder Case: IU suspends 2 teachers, one official

Islamic University (IU) has suspended 2 teachers and 1 official accussed in the murder of Asma Sadia Runa, assistant professor and chairperson of the Social Welfare Department at the university.

This information was disclosed in an office order issued by the university’s registrar office this morning. According to the order, the university administration has suspended Assistant Professor Shyam Sundar Sarkar, Professor Habibur Rahman, and the department’s former assistant registrar Biswajit Kumar Biswas, who have been accused in the Runa murder case.

The order was issued in accordance with Section 154 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC).
Earlier, the university asked the investigation committee formed earlier to conduct an inquiry into the brutal killing and submit its report as soon as possible.

Accounting and information systems Professor Mizanur Rahman has been made the convener of the committee, while Deputy Registrar (Education) Golam Mowla will serve as member secretary.

Other members of the committee are Professor Md Rashiduzzaman of the Bangla Department, student adviser Professor Obaidul Islam, and Provost of Lalon Shah Hall Professor Gazi Arifuzzaman Khan.

Committee convener Professor Mizanur said they had already discussed the matter with the members after receiving the letter and would complete the investigation quickly and submit the report to the university administration.

Runa, 40, was stabbed to death by an employee at her department office on Wednesday.
Her husband, Imtiaz Sultan, filed a case with Islamic University Police Station the following day over the murder.
