A family in Chandrashekherdi village of Bitashwar Union in Daudkandi upazila, Cumilla, was subjected to a violent attack after refusing to pay an alleged extortion demand of Tk10 lakh, leaving women injured and the area gripped by fear.
According to victims and complaint sources, AKM Zulfikar Ali had been overseeing construction of a structure at the residence of his father, Haji Ali Ahmed, in Chandrashekherdi. At around 6:00am on Wednesday, a group of local and outsiders, allegedly led by Shahid, Akbar, Shahadat and Badal, entered the premises and demanded Tk10 lakh from Zulfikar Ali and his wife, physician Tahmina Jahangir.
When the family refused to comply, the assailants allegedly launched a violent attack on the house. As family members tried to resist, three to four women were assaulted and injured, the complaint states.
Several rooms belonging to relatives were vandalised, while gold ornaments and cash were reportedly looted.
The attackers also allegedly took away construction materials, including rods, cement and bricks, and caused extensive damage to the under-construction structure.
The victim family said the attack has directly threatened their home and livelihood. Following the incident, Zulfikar Ali filed a written complaint with Daudkandi Model Police Station on Wednesday morning, naming 10 accused and implicating an additional 30-40 unidentified individuals.
He demanded a fair investigation, immediate arrests and exemplary punishment to curb extortion and violence in the area.
