‘Efforts begin to repatriate Hasina for execution’
Staff Reporter :
The government will undertake new efforts to bring former prime minister Sheikh Hasina back to the country to face execution following her conviction in a crimes against humanity case linked to the July Uprising, International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) Chief Prosecutor Md Aminul Islam said on Tuesday.
“We are aware that Sheikh Hasina is currently in India. She has been convicted, and her return involves legal procedures that must follow due process,” he told reporters at the tribunal premises, adding that the necessary steps would be taken.
When asked whether the current administration was initiating measures to secure her repatriation, Aminul Islam said, “We will take initiatives. We will take appropriate steps to bring her back.”
He also noted that he was not yet informed about the latest progress regarding earlier efforts to bring her back.
Following the fall of the Awami League government on 5 August 2024, the reconstituted International Crimes Tribunal-1 began proceedings against Sheikh Hasina over alleged crimes against humanity committed during that period.
On 17 November last year, the tribunal sentenced Hasina and former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan to death.
In the same verdict, former inspector general of police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, who testified as an approver, received a five-year prison sentence.
